Without a doubt, the car will be your best ally during your holidays in the Basque Country. In the summer months, however, we suggest you opt for public transport.
There are 5[CH1] motorway exits for the towns and villages on the Basque Coast:
Exit n°6 “Bayonne Nord” : take this exit north of Bayonne to go to the Pays Charnégou villages, Saint-Palais, Hasparren and the province of Soule along the A64 towards Pau
Exit n°5 “Bayonne Sud”: take this exit to the south of Bayonne to go to Ainhoa, Sare, Espelette, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port
Exit n°4 at Biarritz: to go to Arcangues, Ahetze and Guéthary
Exit n°3 “Saint-Jean-de-Luz – Nord”: take this exit to the north of Saint-Jean-de-Luz to go to Ascain, Ciboure and Guéthary
Exit n°2 “Saint-Jean-de-Luz – Sud”: take this exit to the south of Saint-Jean-de-Luz to go to Ciboure and Urrugne
Exit n°1 at Hendaye: to go to Biriatou

The advertising slogan was right – Let the train take the strain! Taking the train is a practical way of travelling to the Basque Country. It’s also an ideal means of transport for trips around the region during your stay. Many locals take the train to go to the beach, their place of work or to travel inland from the Basque coast.
The Basque coast is served by the SNCF railway network.
The TGV express train that links Paris to Hendaye-Irun in 5hr48mins stops at Saint-Jean-de-Luz / Ciboure station.
The TER Nouvelle Aquitaine service between Bordeaux and Hendaye also stops at the railway stations in Guéthary and Saint-Jean-de-Luz / Ciboure.
