Eglise Notre Dame de l'Assomption

Historic site and monument, Church

The church of Louhossoa is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption and dates from the 17th century. Built in several stages between 1626 and 1674, the church of Labourdine architecture has a square tower that serves as a bell tower and overlooks the locality. Inside, the polychrome altarpiece, centred on a painting of the Assumption of the Virgin, immediately stands out. The choir, restored at the end of the 20th century, is also dedicated to Mary, with two paintings dedicated to her and carved ornaments depicting "The Annunciation" and "The Visitation", two scenes from the life of the Virgin. As in all Basque churches, the single nave is framed by one or more floors of carved wooden galleries. These spaces are traditionally reserved for men during masses.
Dating from 1726, the bell of the Beata-Maria church is classified as a Historic Monument.
