Between Béarn and the Basque Country, just a stone's throw from the A64 motorway, stop off at Bidache to discover its impressive Château des Ducs de Gramont (13th-18th centuries, listed as a historic monument), its old covered way (medieval period), its parish church Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur (19th century), its Israelite cemetery (17th century), its port with its stepped hold, its houses in the town and in Rue Saint-Jacques.
Plaques affixed to each building punctuate a heritage trail in this ancient sovereignty. Ask at the tourist office for a map of the route.
